Building on stilts isn't a bad idea, but it effectively creates the same problem as the porch would. Aside from that, this would be very helpful for anyone new to Minecraft. I've actually been playing Minecraft most of the time I've been without RS members, so I've built some pretty nice stuff. The server I'm playing on at the moment is PvP, so building to extremes is necessary in order to keep your stuff safe: Massive stilts on this one. xD It goes all the way up to the height limit to prevent people from firing sand on top of our base to kill our water shield (the server has the factions plugin, so people can't just mine into our land; they must blast in). The flowing water over our base is important because TNT launched into it cannot destroy blocks, making it the perfect shield against TNT. The ring around the top is obsidian meant to prevent people from pushing sponges (enabled via a plugin) on top to absorb the water shield. Those columns of lava in the picture are from an (unsuccessful) attack on my base. They were previously a huge ladder and a portal, but I dumped lava on them to make them impractical to use in the future. The outside is quite uninteresting though. The really nice stuff is on the inside. I'm currently in the process of replacing much of the central room's walls with obsidian, to make it even safer. This image is just the public area for my faction, and makes up one-third of the base's size. Oh, everything here was mined/built legitimately. If anyone wants the IP, just ask. The base still has an unused room for anyone to take. It seems this has become the general Minecraft thread for the site.

Wow, amazing. I just started playing so I don't think I'm ready for the PvP version. I have trouble with skeletons. :/

Haha. Just strafe left until they fire an arrow, then run up to them and smash them with a sword. For some reason, the skeleton's aiming method is more accurate when the player moves right than it is when they move left. Both work better than standing still though, so just keep moving.

Lol, thanks. Made some ladders so I can build up, since I'm currently living in a hole. Lulz

What sort of biome are you living in? You could move to a jungle and make a tree house. Also, hostile mobs are less likely to spawn there because they can't spawn on leaves that make up a large portion of the ground there.

Forest biome, from the re-con I've done I haven't seen any jungle but I'll do some more exploring after work.
